MERRIE MONARCH 2010- (April)

Going to the Merrie Monarch Invitational Craft Fair and the 2010 Merrie Monarch Hula Competetion in Hilo, Hawaii was maika'i loa! Here are some pics from the events.

We caught up with Sig Zane of Sig Zane Designs at his shop in Hilo. Pictured here are IpuFarmer, Sig, Ku'uleialoha, and Great-Aunt Donna Mae Jensen. Picked up some amazing clothes there at the store!

March 2010- Preparing for Merrie Monarch... also the new crop of Ipu has come in... we are busy bringing in our ipu and acquiring ipu from other local farmers to meet the demands of the market. This year as "Cultural Demonstrators" at the Merrie Monarch Invitational Hawaiian Arts Fair, we hope to share a little bit about our ipu with the world!

February 2010- Kind of a quiet month on the farm... preparing for the next crop, and Merrie Monarch in April. Check out our article in Ka Wai Ola, the newspaper of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs! Also, we were featured on the OHA Radio show with Kimo and Brickwood!

January 2010- Hau'oli Makahiki Hou! Happy New year!! This year we will be at the Merrie Monarch Festival 2010 cruising the events...especially Kahiko, and possibly selling a few ipu as well! If you want to have any ipu heke or ipu 'ole made, let us know and we can bring it to you! Also, we will have another ad in Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Ka Wai Ola Newspaper.

December 2009- Look for FULL-PAGE AD in Ka Wai Ola, the newspaper of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The Office of Hawaiian Affairs is home to the Hawaiian Registry Program and also offers registry with Kau Inoa Native Hawaiian Registry. In addition, Hawaiian Homelands info as well as Ceded lands and other Hawaii/Kanaka Maoli news.

November 2009- Our site now features buy now for online ipu shopping! Just one click and you can buy your finished ipu heke or raw ipu to make your own. Raw ipu are great for gourd crafts, and ipu drum making activities for your hula school or home gourd art projects.

November 2009- Japanese Halau Keawahou (above) with kumu Hiro Sekine learns how to make ipu heke with gourds from IpuFarm! Students learn to cut, clean, and glue the gourds to make a double gourd drum.

November 8th, 2009, Big Island at Waikoloa: Antie Donna's soloist takes 1st and the group takes 3rd in kupuna hula competition at Moku O Keawe!

November 6th, 2009 Our Great Aunts Kupuna Halani (Hopkins) Berard and Kumu Hula Donna Mae (Hopkins) Jensen (on right) will be returning with halau "Ke Ola Pono No Na Kupuna" to compete in Moku O Keawe Hula Festival competition on Hawaii. Last year the soloist and group took first place! Go Aunties!!

November 4th, 2009- Martha Stewart shows how to make gourd art on NBC... the world is catching on! Martha Stewart uses all kinds of gourds for displays and seasonal gourd decorations.

October 26, 2009 Legendary Kumu hula George Na'ope passes away. His life as Kumu spanned over 60 years. Uncle George was a regular at the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo.

October, 2009 Japanese Hula haumana, "Ami" of Halau Keawahau, a Japanese Hula Halau in Niigata, Japan receives a birthday ipu heke purchased from IpuFarm from her Kumu Hiro. Mahalo nui loa Hiro and Best Wishes to you Ami!
